Pablo Rubio

Biography

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1944, Pablo Rubio is a sculptor, painter, draftsman, designer, curator, and professor. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in art at the Puerto Rico School of Plastic Arts and a Master’s Degree at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Buffalo. He now teaches at the University of Puerto Rico. In 1985, he was invited to the First International Sculpture Symposium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and has attended others since then. His public sculpture is widely known, and he has installed over 20 sculptures all over the Island, as well as others in the United States, Korea, Venezuela, and Ecuador. He has participated in several programs and organizations, like the Puerto Rico Sculptors Association and the Tropical Garden of International Sculpture. In 1984, he broke the mold with his work Guerrero Celeste (“Sky Warrior,” winner of the Fomento Prize), which is a traditional bronze casting portraying contemporary forms. He has continued to revolutionize the medium with his use of stainless steel to explore, among other topics, the conceptual connections between the Taíno symbols and the extrasensory world.

Pablo Rubio nació en San Juan, Puerto Rico, en 1944. Es escultor, pintor, dibujante, diseñador, curador y profesor. Obtuvo su bachillerato en artes en la Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico y una maestría en artes en la State University of New York en Búfalo. Es profesor en la Universidad de Puerto Rico. En 1985 asistió como invitado al Primer Simposio Internacional de Escultura en Santo Domingo, y desde entonces ha asistido a varios otros. Su escultura pública es ampliamente conocida y consta de más de 20 monumentos alrededor de la isla. También ha creado obras públicas para Estados Unidos, Corea, Venezuela y Ecuador. Ha participado en programas y organizaciones como la Asociación de Escultores dePuerto Rico y el Jardín Tropical de Escultura Internacional. En 1984 rompió esquemas con su obra Guerrero celeste (Premio de Fomento), que es un vaciado tradicional en bronce, pero de formas contemporáneas. Ha continuado revolucionando el medio con su uso del acero inoxidable para explorar, entre otros temas, las conexiones conceptuales entre los símbolos taínos y el mundo extrasensorial.
