Fluidity converges with emotion and sensuality in the stone sculptures of Chicago born sculptor, Christina Bertsos. Creating surfaces honed by hand to coax the stone’s luminous quality, she highlights its beauty as a reflection of humanity’s inner essence. Bertsos began her self-taught journey in 2012 at the Dunedin Fine Art Center in Dunedin, FL. A passion for the artisan’s practice and love for the medium grew quickly as she began creating monumental size work and exhibiting within 5 years. “My muse is the stone” Bertsos notes, allowing the stone to guide her as she direct carves. Employing the unique qualities of the stone and her deeply personal inner suggestions, she creates the finished work. Mythological symbolism, ancient Greek sculpture and modern art inspire themes that speak to the strength and sensuality of the divine feminine while an early career as a fashion designer and love for beautiful textiles influences her.
