CALL TO ARTIST for ARTWORKS Mural Project:

We are looking for artists interested in a collaboration with Elementary School age students and their art teacher in creating a new mural!

It’s one of those once in a lifetime opportunities to bring together young minds, dedicated teachers and a professional artist for a mural project designed to engage kids in their power to create, help them build community connections, and explore how they can influence the world through the process of making something.

OVERVIEW:

Creative Pinellas, in partnership with Pinellas County Public Works, has been invited by the Pinellas County school system to create  a public artwork based on the desire of the students, teachers and families to engage in a mural project.  We are seeking artists who would be interested in working with Pinellas County elementary school children throughout the mural process: from inspiration through installation.  The project is slated for completion by May 16, 2022.

Process will include:

$6000 for artist/ up to $1000 for materials

  • Artists will meet with students and art teacher on April 4th, April 8th, April 11, 12 or 13th to talk about the process of creating a mural, how design ideas come about and gather inspiration from the minds of the kids

  • Artist will involve the students (and parents/teachers) in painting on two Saturdays during the paint schedule that the artist will be creating the mural

Art Goals:

This is a mural project created to incorporate the children of the community in the inspiration stage of the process for the artist through the installation stage of the project.  The goal is to help children participate in the process of art and be able to see that work in their community.  Themes and ideas will be discovered through the discussion with the children, the teachers and through information collected at two community meetings and public surveys.

Artist Information Session:

Artists will have an opportunity to meet with Creative Pinellas and participating Partners to learn about the project and to ask any questions they may have during the application period via an online meeting platform.

Location Information:

The Mural Location is on Belcher Road, just South of Sutherland Elementary

There will be a POD on location to store materials, a rolling scaffold will be provided for Artist only to use as needed.

Application Information:

Each application submitted between Monday, March 7 – Wed, March 23 at 11:59 pm will be reviewed by a panel to include a Creative Pinellas Representative, PCS representatives, a mural artist, and a community member.  Artists will be notified no later than Tuesday, March 29, 2022.  If you are not selected, you will also be notified at that time.

Upon notification of award, the artist will receive community engagement information, detailed measurements and photos of your specific location and will meet with Students and Teachers on one of the following dates: April 4th, 8th, 11th, 12th, or 13th .   After this meeting, the artist will complete three (3) Mural Design Mock Up proposals that will be presented to the students and teachers for feedback. The three Mural Design Mock Up proposals should be submitted no later than Wednesday, April 20, 2022. Final Approvals provided by Creative Pinellas will be completed no later than Friday, April 22, 2022. Earliest possible start date for onsite work would be Monday, Apr 25, 2022 with two Saturday dates that would include elementary school students participating in the process, dates currently planned for Saturday April 30, 2022 and May 7, 2022
