Weekend Plans: Reid Jenkins

Getting the scoop on what local artists will be attending Friday-Sunday. This week, we talk to emerging muralist Reid Jenkins. The artist closes his show, “Fuzzy Logic,” Saturday and shares what else he has going on.
Contemporary artist Reid Jenkins, aka El Ren Sloe, lives and works in St Petersburg. Featured in the SHINE Mural Festival, he holds a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art and has shown in numerous group shows — “Re Group Show” at Redefine Gallery, Orlando and “100 Films” at Blue Lucy, St. Petersburg.
“My current work focuses on the display of the range of human emotions and experience,” his artist statement reads. “By capturing the moment of an individual’s being in an iconic stature, the essence of the individual is conveyed.”
A closing reception for the show featuring the above-referenced work, “Fuzzy Logic,” can be caught one last time at the COVE in Pinellas Park at 4-9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24.
Intended to model logical reasoning with vague or imprecise statements, “Fuzzy Logic” explores what Reid perceives to be often understood and intuitively fuzzy logic. In a broad sense, fuzzy logic includes a variety of formalism and techniques that represent a range of the truth, Jenkins says in his artist statement.
“What is viewed as reality is only our perception of reality,” he continues. “Reality is always skewed by our personal perspective of the world which becomes our truth. Life is not cut and dry or black and white; it is but gray and foggy. El Ren Sloe is but Jenkin’s View From The Fog of the gray.”
What else is Jenkins really doing this weekend?
Perhaps that’s up for interpretation, but we went ahead and asked him to share his to-do list.
Friday night: “Black, White & Gold,” at the Station House, St. Petersburg. The show features new works by Bekky Beukes and Deidra Leigh Kling/Relic Imagery Recommended dress is formal, black, white and gold. After Party venue: The Mandarin Hide.
Saturday afternoon: A stop at Leslie Curran Gallery to see “Site|Line” show by Charles Parkhill. (Click here for our feature on the show by Eva Avenue) before attending the Emerging Artist Grant Workshop,3-5 p.m. The free Creative Pinellas seminar [Editor’s note: No, we didn’t put him up to this] offers tips and guidelines for applying for the Emerging Artist grant. Deadline is March 12.
Sunday: Tattooing at Ink Werkz Tattoo Studio.
