Hello, my name is Jenipher Chandley, and I want to dive right into why I am a painter and what drives my artistic expression. Creating art has been a part of me for as long as I can remember—it’s not just something I do, it’s an essential part of who I am, like breathing. Painting is my outlet, my solace, and my purpose.
Throughout my life, art has been my savior during difficult times, providing me with a sense of peace and a voice that yearns to be heard and understood. While I also engage in other art forms like singing, dancing, sculpting, and writing poetry, painting holds a special place in my heart. It is the medium through which I can truly express myself.
In the upcoming Emerging Artist 2023 period, I will delve into the theme of overcoming trauma. It’s important for me to emphasize that I am not defined by the hardships I’ve experienced—I am a survivor, not a victim. I never wanted my past to garner sympathy or define the value of my art. I aim for viewers to appreciate my work for its intrinsic beauty and meaning, even before knowing the story behind it.
However, I’ve come to realize the importance of acknowledging and finding the good within the challenging moments of my past as a part of the healing process. It was not easy to be homeless at 14 or to seek refuge in a domestic violence shelter at a young age while pregnant with two children. But I’ve learned to be thankful for those experiences, as they have shaped me into the resilient person I am today.
I am proud of the person I have become, faults and all. I see myself as a constant learner, embracing growth and embracing the exciting journey of self-improvement. Each piece of art I create is a testament to my personal growth.

Throughout this journey, I will share hints of the challenges I have overcome. What truly matters is how we can relate to one another and grow together. Tears are universal, regardless of the reasons behind them. We all share the desire to heal, find happiness, and discover inner peace—it’s a common thread that connects humanity. Through my art, I pour my heart out, and together we can embark on a journey of growth and healing.
