Virtual: The new reality

As we all navigate the “new normal” of social distancing, extreme hygiene and self-quarantine, it’s striking to see how rapidly the arts, culture, entertainment, and our personal connections have gravitated ever more into the online realm. In a previous blog post, Culture for your quarantine, I shared a robust list of both local and worldwide museums, galleries, music venues, etc that continue to offer some kind of virtual experience in lieu of physical events. Oddly, this pandemic is bringing out creative solutions from tech-savvy people in so many businesses and nonprofits. And as a Creative Pinellas grantee, I’m thrilled to say the organization has been upping their game and going the extra mile to support this year’s winners during the shutdown in a variety of ways. These kinds of efforts are helping us all stay engaged, keeping spirits up while informing and entertaining us. Which isn’t the easiest task while so much of our lives are on-hold. I, for one, am trying to remain optimistic, investing in opportunities to move my art career forward in both the real world and “the matrix”.

The first of these was a Virtual Artist Studio Tour — a video created and shared by each of the nine grantees. I must say I’ve been wanting to do something along these lines for some time, and this served as the perfect moment. Since mine is a home studio, and I don’t live along the path of any of the frequent local art walks, this was a rare chance to welcome visitors, share my workspace and briefly discuss my creative process, technical approach and ultimate goals of my painting practice. So, come on in! Stay a while.

Hope you enjoyed a glimpse inside my studio (and head)! In my next blog post, I’ll be sharing excerpts from the Live Artist Q&A Zoom Event recently hosted by Creative Pinellas. And coming soon—an Interactive 3D Virtual Tour of the Emerging Artist 2020 Exhibition, in anticipation of the delayed physical public opening event at the gallery!
