Like you, I sing in the shower. The other day I belted out an intolerable Vesti la Giubba from Pagliacci, and last week it was a medley of Lennon & McCartney tunes.

Unlike most of you with real talent, my singing career is slapdash, and no record company has yet to approach me to do Schubert’s complete Winterreise. But this doesn’t mean I should give up on vocals – in fact, I’ve always wanted to join other closet Pavarottis in some form of public harmony.

So I’ll be attending the upcoming Master Chorale of Tampa Bay’s Summer Sing on the University of South Florida’s Tampa campus. The event gives people like me a chance to actually sing something good, and do it alongside one of the best choirs in the country.

Also attending will be April Janowski of St. Petersburg, who works by day in the insurance business and sings with the chorus in her off hours.

“It’s a great way to meet new singers, see old friends, and get a peek at the Master Chorale’s upcoming season,” she says. “What I love most about this group are the friendships that develop.”

As a singer, Janowski wanted to belong to a strong chorus in the Tampa Bay area, and found it when she attended her first Summer Sing in 2015.

“I was looking to join a choir after a break of several years, but when I listened to clips of the Master Chorale on their website, I felt intimidated by the caliber of the choir,” she explains. “At Summer Sing, everyone was so approachable and welcoming. I even got a few pep talks that gave me the confidence to audition and I’ve been a member of the choir since then.”

Anyone who registers (by Wednesday, August 10) will find a packet of music on their seat in the rehearsal hall and will be able to sing side-by-side with members of the chorus throughout the event, led by guest conductor Dr. Jeffery Redding and pianist Rodney Shores.
