Studio Routine

When working in the studio I like to warm up first. I’ll often start by sketching, looking at images, staring out the window, or writing and reading. Warming up helps a lot because just like exercise, it gets my thoughts in the right frame of mind.

I love listening to music and podcasts while painting. Thievery Corporation, C Duncan, Radiolab and This is Love are my current favorites. Sometimes I paint to silence, simply because I don’t feel like picking anything, or because it interrupts my mood too much and takes away from my focus on painting. There are times when what I am listening to has influenced my work and sometimes that’s cool if that’s my intention, but if not, I have to just be aware of it.

There’s also admin work as well that I have to carve out. Fortunately, I have a lot of experience working in arts administration in an office. Sitting down to organize and get it done comes easily to me.

Also, here I am in a new studio space! I’ll be nestled in here for a long time and very happy about it. 🙂
