STT: My Time at Brandon Ballet

June 6th, 2018

I had the pleasure to travel to Brandon to teach the amazing students of Brandon Ballet as a part of my summer teaching tour. The kids were so talented and highly invested in learning a new style of dance. As a student that only focuses on ballet it can be a bit challenging to step out of your comfort zone and do something new. I talked the kids Contemporary Jazz and created a new rep piece for them to perform for their end of the program showing. I used my IAUM project curriculum to push the dancers past their personal mental blocks and enriched their artistic expression. By the end of the week all the kids were moving with expansive port de bras and way more risk. Overall it was an amazing experience and I would love to go back and teach again. As a young teacher and professional artist it is very important that you make sure each class is about the students development. It is our job to make sure we continue to pass down the foundational information needed to become a successful dancer. It’s such a gratifying feeling to know I am accomplishing that and sharing my energy with so many up and coming stars.
