AæSmithsonian exhibition exploring the power of Star Wars costumes opens today at the MFA St. Pete. The official costumes came directly from the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.
No other story depicts the heroes’ journey like Star Wars. Its dynamic characters and fantastic realm have been deeply influenced and shaped by costumes.
The exhibition reminds us that costumes aren’t just functional; they become a form of communication, which recalls Marshall McLuhan’s famous phraseæ “The medium is the message” –æthe form of a medium latches itself in any message it conveys, creating a symbolism by which the medium influences how the message is perceived.
Likewise, the costume as a concept has a strong influence on the message of films, especially in fictional worlds, and none of these universes have been as everlasting in pop culture as Star Wars.

From Dark Vaderäó»s complex breathing apparatus and menacing stance, golden C-3PO to the royal gowns of Queen Amidala and the iconic slave bikini by Princess Leia. Thereäó»s more than 60 hand-crafted costumes from all seven main Star Wars features. You can see the historical and mythical influences; rich texture and eclectic ideas added by the designers. As part of the exhibit there’re interesting short films explaining the process through behind-the-scenes interviews with artists, designers and actors.
