Mitzi Jo Gordon is a multidisciplinary artist based in St. Petersburg, Florida, whose practice centers on social engagement and publicly-accessible installations.
After receiving her bachelor’s degree in journalism from NYU in 1997, Gordon worked in development and marketing for institutions such as the Dali Museum and Tampa Museum of art. In 2011, she founded the Bluebird Books traveling literary project, sharing book culture with communities onboard a converted school bus. Through that fledgling effort, Gordon discovered an abiding passion for developing mobile interactive spaces.
She now works on non-traditional art experiences throughout the Bay area, and has spent more than a decade fostering engagement as an artist and curator. She launched the Carmada art car program in 2014 in partnership with Gasparilla Festival of the Arts. Designed to inspire curiosity and exploration, Carmada shares semi-annual art-on-wheels events, demos, and activities on both sides of the Bay.
As a leader of the SPACEcraft artist team, Gordon works to bring tactile art exploration to Pinellas County parks via two colorful shipping containers. Whether selecting partner artists or developing activities for the public, she is focused on supporting local talent and providing the most enticing experience for audiences of all ages.
Gordon was a founding member and manager of the Venus studio community in St. Petersburg(2017 – 2022). She is currently developing collaborative installations for Crab Devil’s Peninsularium, an immersive art experience coming to Tampa in 2022-23.
