South Pasadena Mural Project

Creative Pinellas & City of South Pasadena are collaborating on a project to beautify the community of South Pasadena through public art.

Overview

Creative Pinellas and the City of South Pasadena, Florida are excited to announce a new mural project on Pasadena Ave. This initiative aims to enhance the beauty of the community through the artistry of local muralists residing and working in the surrounding areas. The South Pasadena Mural Project, a collaborative effort, seeks to create captivating spaces that uplift and showcase the unique essence of South Pasadena while enhancing the commercial corridor’s aesthetic appeal. The project’s objective is to infuse color and vibrancy into the community by inviting skilled mural artists who possess a distinct perspective and the ability to create intricate and engaging artworks. 

This project will take place on South Pasadena Ave and will include murals along the business corridor.  The program will have 2 cycles of applications.  Applications for the first cycle open July 11, 2023, with murals completed on or around November 13, 2023. Applications for the second cycle will open December 12, 2023, with Murals completed on or around April 29, 2024.

We would like to hear from the community for this project. This mural project is a partnership with intentions to create appealing spaces that uplift, intrigue and show what makes South Pasadena so special and to beautify the commercial corridor. The goal will be for people to slow down, see amazing murals, and view what South Pasadena has to offer to locals and tourists alike while also giving residents and local businesses pride in their city.

Artist fees vary per location. Additional funds will be provided to cover costs for materials and supplies. 

The artist must either be based in Pinellas County or have strong ties to the area. We kindly request that artists who have completed a mural for Creative Pinellas within the past 12 months refrain from applying. Our aim is to maximize opportunities for a wide range of artists.

The South Pasadena Mural Project is a collaborative initiative designed to create visually appealing spaces that inspire, captivate, and showcase the distinctive qualities that make South Pasadena special, while enhancing the aesthetics of the commercial corridor. The objective is to encourage people to pause, admire remarkable murals, and discover what South Pasadena has to offer both residents and visitors, instilling a sense of pride in the local community and businesses.

Call To Artists Important Dates:

First Round:

  • Call for Entries Open: July 11, 2023
  • Artist Info session: July 20, 2023, 6:30-7:30pm (Via Zoom)
  • Call for Entries Close: Tuesday, Aug 15, 2023
  • Panel: September 5, 2023
    Selected Artists will be tentatively notified by September 8, 2023 (Depending on City Commission meeting)
  • Artist/ Partner Meetings: within 1 week of selection date
  • Three Mural Design Mock-Ups must be submitted: September 29, 2023
  • Artist resubmits Final Design: October 6, 2023
  • Approved no later than: October 13, 2023
  • Possible Painting start date: October 16, 2023
  • Walkthrough and completion date: No later than November 13-30, 2023
  • Touch Ups (if needed): 3 days to complete touch-ups after walk-through.

Second Round:

  • Call for Entries Open: December 12, 2023
  • Artist Info session: Dec. 19, 2023, 12-1 pm (Via Zoom)
  • Call for Entries Close: January 24, 2024
  • Selected Artists will be tentatively notified by February 12. 2024 (Depending on City Commission meeting)
  • Artist/ Partner Meetings: within 1 week of selection date
  • Three Mural Design Mock-Ups must be submitted: Feb. 28, 2024
  • Approved no later than: March 8, 2024
  • Possible start date: March 11, 2024
  • Walkthrough and completion date: No later than April 29, 2024
  • Touch Ups (if needed): 3 days to complete touch-ups after walk-through.
