Creative Pinellas is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 Emerging Artist Grant program. This grant award provides support to 10 Pinellas County artists who are early in their career, regardless of age, who are gaining momentum and who may be at a critical juncture of their development.
The 2018 Emerging Artist Grant recipients represent multiple genres and include visual art, choreography, literature and music composition: Daniel Barojas (painting), Saumitra Chandratreya (textile art installations), Brandie Dziegiel (printmaking), Marquis Floyd (choreography, contemporary dance), Reid Jenkins (painting), Tenea Johnson (literature, fiction), Ari Robinson (visual art, mixed media), Xina Scuderi (photography), Jonathan Talit (installation) and Suzanne Wieland (music composition).
“We’re very excited about this year’s recipients. The talent and trajectory of these artists shows incredible potential. I’m looking forward to watching them develop over the course of the grant period and beyond,” says Christopher Hubbard, programs manager for Creative Pinellas.
Recipients will participate in a variety of development and community outreach activities throughout the course of the grant funding period (May – September 2018) including the production of new work, regular meetings with an artist mentor, and participation in the Creative Pinellas “Conversations in Art + Innovation” community discussion series. The grant period will conclude with an exhibition and performance of the recipients’ new work to be held at the former Gulf Coast Museum of Art (12211 Walsingham Road, Largo) in late September 2018.
In addition to the creation of new work, Emerging Artist grantees will join the 2018 Professional Artist Grant recipients in producing regular blogs featuring an insight into their creative process, documentation of new work, and a peek into the life of a practicing artist. These blogs will be posted alongside the Creative Pinellas journal, artist and venue directories, and event calendar at creativepinellas.org.
