2025 Signal Box Project

Creative Pinellas, Pinellas County, and Lealman CRA invite Pinellas Artists to submit original artwork to beautify Pinellas County by transforming traffic signal control boxes into a collection of public art.

PURPOSE

The purpose of traffic signal cabinet art is to deter graffiti vandalism on transportation infrastructure, beautify rights-of-way, and support our community as an arts destination. The use of art on public infrastructure has been shown to prevent graffiti vandalism in the County, demonstrating that Public Art Works. The artwork will be reproduced as a vinyl wrap and applied to traffic signal boxes by a professional vendor who creates a custom template and fits a selected artwork to this template, with the aim to retain the intention of the Artist.

The signal boxes are located throughout the County, with 8 sponsored by Pinellas County, and 3 sponsored by Lealman CRA. County and Lealman representatives will choose which locations to match selected artwork to. Each application may choose to be considered for one or both of the sets of signal boxes.

SUBMITTING TWO OR FOUR ARTWORKS

In the same application, Artists may choose to be considered for both the Pinellas County- and Lealman CRA-sponsored sets of signal boxes.

If an Artist selects both opportunities, the Artist will submit 4 different artworks: 2 for the Pinellas County boxes and 2 for the Lealman CRA boxes.

If the Artist selects one opportunity, the Artist will submit 2 artworks.

ARTWORK ELIGIBILITY

Artwork may originally be 2D, 3D, abstract, and/or representational but it must be translatable to a 2D digital file to be used for vinyl wrapping.

New for 2025: In past years, selected Artists would create new work if selected for a signal box, but for 2025, the artworks submitted in the application are the artworks considered for wrapping on signal boxes. The sponsoring organization may make requests for small edits of selected artwork, typically so the artwork meets requirements of being shown on County property.

An Artist should only submit artwork that matches the following criteria:

  • The Artist must hold the copyright for all artwork submitted.
  • The artwork submitted must have been created after January 1, 2022.
  • The artwork submitted may not have been shown in a Pinellas County gallery, theatre, journal, or similar venue within a year previous to the application date.
  • Artwork files submitted in the application must be high-resolution originals or professional images or scans in jpeg or tiff format of the artwork. Preferred resolution is 300 dpi/ppi. Low-resolution images, general pictures of framed work, and images that include the Artist alongside the artwork may result in non-consideration of an application.
  • The artwork includes no text in any language, other than the name of the Artist at bottom as part of “the Artist’s signature” area; no alphanumeric characters, other than the year of creation at bottom as part of “the Artist’s signature” area; and no images of traffic signs, traffic signals, traffic lights, or similar.

Artwork that is deemed to be offensive, commercial, religious, political, or distracting in design or nature will be excluded from consideration.
