As I began my journey as a digital artist I found myself inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat , he was an artist who would not care what others thought about him nor his art but created a level of freedom through his works that is recognized around the world today. Along with Basquiat , Kerry James Marshall has had a great influence on my perception and accepting my art as is. As an artist I have had people say my art was “too black”. I once heard Marshall in a documentary state: “My figures are black , because I am black.”. Through his courage and drive it has given me a new sense of courage to be myself with my art. Through my art my goal is to reflect a story shown throughout the community, that our black is beautiful by any means.
