Those who step into St. Pete ArtWorks Gallery have most likely encountered a sprightly 90-year-old artist in her studio. Carole Rosefelt, this month’s featured artist, will invite you in and tell you about the gallery and the art. If you are an artist, you may receive a piece of business advice or a critique of your work.
Carole Rosefelt has been a visual artist for over 70 years. She grew up making things and reminisced, “Walking through the door on my first day of kindergarten at age 4, I spotted an easel with 3 pots of red, blue and yellow paint. I thought to myself, ‘I hope I can do that’.”
She attended art school and studied business in the 1950s when expectations for women were different. “Someday I have to be something,” she thought. And later, “A woman has to be able to make a living, especially when your husband dies and leaves you with 5 children to raise alone.”
Her business acumen has served her well over the years in decorative arts, teaching, and selling her own art and jewelry. She taught at the Dunedin Fine Art Center for 15 years and is currently mentoring many emerging artists.
Carole still has a compulsion to be creative, even as she loses her eyesight. These days her joy is in socializing with fellow artists and sharing her ideas with others.
The current exhibition of Carole’s Bold Abstracts is a slice from her artistic life. These are large contemporary canvases that explore geometric composition with a touch of nature using mostly red, yellow and turquoise.
You can talk with the artist and celebrate her achievements at the opening reception for her Bold Abstracts exhibit on February 10 from 5 to 9 pm during St. Pete’s Second Saturday Art Walk and throughout the month at St. Pete ArtWorks. Berkeley Grimball will be providing music, and you can enjoy refreshments while mingling with Carole and other visual artists who are part of this cooperative gallery.
