Second-generation Latinx Lorraine Monteagut has dedicated years to advocating for the reclamation of ancestral healing traditions. Through leading astrology and yoga workshops, conducting research on Bruja feminism, teaching and cultivating community, Monteagut has carried forth the spiritual life that would make her great grandmother, an espiritista in Cuba, proud.
Monteagut’s debut book Brujas: The Magic and Power of Witches of Color blends personal narrative and thoughtful sociological research to chronicle the lives of Afro-Latinx immigrants and indigenous Americans who practice witchcraft and spirituality. From self-care to activism, Brujas does due diligence to voices that are often left out of books – especially books of self-care, ritual and healing.
Monteagut is an inspiring part of a growing movement that reclaims brujeria and its many practices with the aim to empower and celebrate diversity and inclusion now and for generations to come.
I’ll be joining Monteagut at Tombolo Books this Thursday at 7 pm for a reading and conversation about Brujas: The Magic and Power of Witches of Color.
