My Figure Drawing Class
I teach a six-week figure drawing course on Saturday mornings at the Dunedin Fine Art Center. The next class starts next Saturday, the 18th, and there are still a few days to sign-up. I wanted to give an overview of the class for any prospective drawing students out there.
The class is intended for those who have some experience with drawing and are looking to further hone their abilities by drawing the figure. Drawing a person from life is very difficult, but the foundational skills learned in doing so will translate to many different forms of art-making.
Each Saturday, there is a different model that comes in to pose for the class. I give short demonstrations on different concepts related to figure drawing and students draw the figure to practice what they learned. I draw as the students draw and come around to help and give suggestions as needed.
We do a variety of different pose lengths, ranging from 2-minute gestures to 2-hour long poses. The topics I cover include proportion, contour line, value, and positive vs. negative space. I encourage students to continually improve their drawings by erasing and re-working areas. We primarily work in charcoal and chalk on 18” x 24” newsprint pads.
What students will get out of the class is not just a pretty picture but the knowledge and techniques they need to continually develop themselves as artists. Any questions about the class can be emailed to me at zoeapapas@gmail.com. Students can sign-up here.
