Meeting My Crew: The Musicians

As we get closer and closer to the opening of “Who I Am: Journey to Freedom” I thought it was important to introduce the performers that thought it not robbery to be on board with this project! When I first met Kenny Walker I felt in my spirit that he would be able to capture the sound that I envisioned for this work. I am definitely excited to have him on board during this season!

Please meet Kenny Walker, Bassist, Composer and the Musical Director of this run of Journey to Freedom.

Kenny started playing the bass guitar in his father’s church.  Largely self-taught, playing in church proved to be a great musical education giving him the foundation necessary to graduate to playing jazz with some of the Tampa Bay area’s most notable players.  Kenny went on to play with many different artists in the bay area and throughout the state as well as leading his own bands including the critically acclaimed Dr. LoHertz and the Groove Injektors. Playing a rich variety of musical styles including, but not limited to, gospel, jazz, rock, folk, blues, funk, and disco as well as World Music from countries in Africa, South America and the Caribbean. Kenny also does electronic music and modular synthesis/sound design on a system he developed that he affectionately calls “SkyLab”.

Kenny has held the bass chair in several theater productions around the Tampa Bay area. The Wiz (1997), Satchmo (2003, 05) Black Nativity (2004-13, 18), I left My heart (2006), My Way, 70 Girls 70, Gypsy (2007) Pirates of Penzance (2008, 16), Hair, Rooms (2010), and Rent (2011), Bright Lights Big City (2015), Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grille starring Melba Moore (2018)

Kenny was the bassist for Helios jazz Orchestra, the resident jazz ensemble at St. Pete College (2008-2013). Kenny is a founding and current member of New Groove City (1999-) and the Soul Sensations (2015-)

Kenny owns and operates the New Groove City Music Complex where the top bands/acts in the Tampa Bay area come to rehearse and record.
