The St. Petersburg Jazz Festival 2024 takes place April 1-6 with concert events and free jazz workshops. The event, in its 15th season, is presented by the nonprofit EMIT and directed by David Manson.

 

Free Workshops

at St. Petersburg College – HS 109

Monday, April 1 at 12:30 pm
Alexis Cole will give a vocal jazz workshop at St. Petersburg College in HS 109. The address is 6605 5th Ave. North. Besides being an amazing jazz singer, her students include 3-X GRAMMY winner Samara Joy.

Thursday, April 4 at 12:30 pm
Rafael Pereira gives a Brazilian percussion workshop where you can play the surdo, agogo or pandeiro and learn carnival percussion cadences! Rafael has toured with Janell Monae and Bruno Mars.

Helios Jazz Orchestra with Alexis Cole

The 18-member Helios Jazz Orchestra, directed by Dr. David Manson, backs singer Alexis Cole in a concert of diverse big ensemble jazz. Alexis Cole is “one of the great voices of today,” compared to classic jazz singers such as Sarah Vaughan and Anita O’Day.

Mauricio Rodriguez & the MJR Latin Project

Mauricio Rodriguez (bass), Zachary Bornheimer (saxophone), Pablo Arencibia (piano) and Andy Forner (drums) present a concert of original new Cuban contemporary music and Latin jazz staples. Ticket information here.

 Markus Gottschlich Trio 
Music Center at St. Petersburg College

Making a St. Petersburg Jazz Festival debut, the Trio with Markus Gottschlich (piano/composer), Michael Washington (drums) and Noam Tanzer (bass) unveils premieres alongside selections from the albums Found Sounds and Of Places Between. Ticket information here.

O Som Do Jazz features Rio de Janeiro singer Andrea Moraes Manson and a crew of experienced musicians performing samba-jazz, Bossa Nova, Balanço, Baião and MPB including new works by composer David Manson.

O Som Do Jazz (the sound of jazz in Portuguese) recaptures the grace, energy and spirit of Brazilian music. Special guests Jose and Rafael add amazing flute, saxophone and percussion into the energy. This is a free concert!

Hot Club SRQ

Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement

Hot Club SRQ plays Gypsy Jazz that’s deeply rooted in the style of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. The concert will be in the museum ballroom which features an 18-foot-long Mont Oro antique bar from 1900. Ticket information here.
