Welcome to the first installment of our weekly 5 Things to Do event guide. There are already some great comprehensive listings of events in Pinellas County, so we decided to do something a bit different. Every week, weäó»re going to sift through the wealth of area happenings and hand-pick the five most interesting, unusual, captivating, once-in-a-blue-moon events.
Weäó»ll highlight canäó»t-miss, high-profile stadium concerts, signings by national authors, and big museum retrospectives äóñ but also openings by exciting local artists, poetry readings in intimate coffeehouses, and gigs by offbeat bands youäó»ve never heard of. Weäó»ll give you the best of Pinellas, every week, from top to bottom.

Shana Moulton – Whispering Pines 10 Live Opera äóñ Thursday October 6th, 7 p.m., Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg
Giving offbeat video artist Shana Moulton her first solo museum show is a huge win for the MFA. Her work, focused largely on a fictional befuddled woman named Cynthia navigating the maze of commercial health and self-help pitches, manages to be at once uncanny and hilarious, adventurous and crowd-pleasing. This live performance of the tenth installment in Moultonäó»s long-running Whispering Pines series is a collaboration with composer and vocalist Nick Hallett, pushing her work in ambitious new directions.
Henry Rollins, Friday October 7th, 8 p.m., Capitol Theatre, Clearwater
Henry Rollins first hit the national stage fronting the now-legendary L.A. punk band Black Flag in the 1980s, but he cemented his legacy with a series of poetry books and spoken-word performances in the 1990s. Acerbic, bold and funny, Rollinsäó» live shows have him sharing experiences from his time in the music world, his left-leaning political commentary and introspective jaunts into his own dark places.
Wordier Than Thou Grand Central Lit Crawl äóñ Saturday October 1st, St. Petersburg Grand Central Arts District, 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Free.
Wordier Than Thou has been working for years to promote local writers in St. Petersburg and Clearwater through open mics, contests, classes. Now, theyäó»re presenting a pub crawl with a literary tinge, featuring local authors reading at watering holes in the Grand Central Arts District. Stops include Sawgrass Tiki Bar & Teahouse and Old Key West Bar & Grill.
Embracing the Art of Filmmaking: An Evening with Ciro Guerra, Saturday October 1st, 2016, 6 p.m., Miller Auditorium, Eckerd College. Free.
You may not have heard of Ciro Guerra äóñ but you will. The Colombian directoräó»s first film, made at the age of 23, was his countryäó»s 2004 submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and his 2015 Embrace of the Serpent was nominated for the award. Heäó»s now slated to direct his first Hollywood film, The Detainee, based on a series of books by Peter Liney. This intimate conversation will touch on Guerraäó»s career as a filmmaker and his aims as an artist.
Beethovenäó»s Symphony Number 9, Performed by the Florida Orchestra. Sunday October 2nd, 2 p.m., Ruth Eckerd Hall.
In this monthäó»s Journal, we focus on classical music. So we had to highlight the Florida Orchestraäó»s season opener, a performance of the final and perhaps greatest work of one of classical musicäó»s titans. Stirring, dramatic, and dynamic, the 9th Symphony has remained a touchstone of culture for nearly two centuries, its celebration and challenge of the human soul standing athwart the assaults of reality TV and pop celebrity.
