En Plein Air
by Joseph Weinzettle
Plein-air painting in progress. 2020
This is my studio. I work “en plein air” in Pinellas County, meaning I work onsite or on location, outdoors.
Pleinairism is, or can be, a solitary activity appropriate for this age of Coronavirus. For this series of works, I get up before dawn and walk to sites in the Anclote River Basin off the Pinellas County Trail.
The light at this time offers a more subdued and tonal in comparison to the intense white light at midday which calls for a high-key palette. The atmosphere at this time is, for me, reminiscent of George Inness and Hasegawa Tohaku. The viewer/artist may consider the feeling of the landscape over the detail or local color.
This work is about 90% finished. As the oil layer drys, I will re-visit the site to add additional work.
