One project that I started working on in the summer, and will hopefully finish soon, is illustrating a children’s book. It’s a personal project that stemmed from reading to my baby. I love sing-reading books to my daughter – our favorites are “It’s a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong and “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley. One song that I really enjoy singing to her before bed is “Rainbow Connection,” so I went online to see if I could find an illustrated children’s book version of it. I could not! With all of the many things one can find online, I thought for certain that this song would have a children’s book!
Well, since it didn’t have a book, I decided to make one. I started gathering as much colorful media as I could, and divided the song into different pages. The final piece will be square so that I can print it as a board book later. I don’t plan on officially trying to publish it, but would love to eventually share it with friends who have babies.
Why are there so many
Songs about rainbows
And what’s on the other side?
Rainbows are visions
But only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it
I know they’re wrong wait and see
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
Who said that every wish
Would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that
And someone believed it
Look what it’s done so far
What’s so amazing that keeps us stargazing
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
All of us under its spell
We know that it’s probably magic
Have you been half asleep
And have you heard voices?
I’ve heard them calling my name
Is this the sweet sound
That calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same
I’ve heard it too many times to ignore it:
It’s something that I’m supposed to be
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me
