Samuel Hammer

I am a retired biology professor living on half an acre of native jungle in S Petersburg. My time is split between maintaining the garden and weaving. I started weaving during the pandemic having painted in oils all my life, and it took many months to get comfortable with the pin loom, which looks like a glorified potholder loom. Most of my work reflects the botanical observations that are central to my cognitive process. In my weaving practice I strive to create abstract sculptural forms that transcend the expression communicated through two-dimensional work. After the brutal terror attacks of Oct 7, 2023 my focus shifted to express my horror, anger, and despair over the ghastly deeds of the terrorists and the indifference of a world that seemed to have gone crazy. My work in this exhibit reflects these emotions.
