Uke-O de Mayo presented by the Tampa Bay Ukulele Society


Celebration Sunday, May 5 at Creative Pinellas Campus

The Tampa Bay Ukulele Society (TBUS) is celebrating National Play Your Ukulele Day and Cinco de Mayo with its own mashup event Uke-O de Mayo… a free Music & Arts Festival on the grounds of Creative Pinellas in Largo from 11am- 4:30pm Sunday, May 5.

TBUS, the largest ukulele club in Florida boasting more than 2,400 members, has planned a fun-filled family event with ukuleles, music, learn-to-play workshops for all ages, sing and play along jams for “ukers” of all skill levels, dancing, family crafts for children and adults, a Mexican Fiesta-inspired art exhibit open to all and contests. Bring your ukuleles, bring your family, bring your chairs!

Uke-O de Mayo is partially funded through a grant from Creative Pinellas and the Pinellas County Government. Creative Pinellas is located at 12211 Walsingham Road, Largo 33778.

There will be an opportunity chance drawing for two LUNA ukuleles donated to TBUS by (LUNA Guitars & Percussion). Net proceeds are designated to help fund TBUS Cares Community Services Projects that support Habitat for Humanity, Tampa Bay Foodbank, Clearwater Aquarium, Metropolitan Ministries, CASA, Toys for Tots, American Red Cross, Ukulele Kids Club, Rebels Rescue, Marcia P. Hoffman School for Music, Libraries and Schools in Greater Tampa Bay area.

Food trucks will have delicious food and drinks for sale from 11am-4pm


It’s All About the Music!

11:30am-4:30pm Free Introduction to Ukulele Workshops: Inside, Auditorium TBUS members will teach how to hold a ukulele, strum, play chords and lead in playing a few songs. Twenty-five ukuleles will be available for those who don’t own one. Sign up at the TBUS Booth in the Gallery entryway when you arrive. There are two sessions for adults and two sessions for children. Seating is limited.

  • 11:30 am Beginners’ Class: For adults who have never played Ukulele
  • 12:30pm Beginners’ Class: For adults who have never played Ukulele
  • 2:30pm Children’s Class: For children ages 8-15
  • 3:30pm Children’s Class: For children ages 8-15

11am-1pm Sing & Play Jam: Outside, Under the Shade Trees Attendees who play ukuleles are encouraged to bring their ukuleles and join in the big Jam and Singalong of easy songs led by Tony DiGeorgio and Sue Glor- Scheib.

Noon-1pm Children’s Ukulele Group Performances and Singalong with Connie Manson: Art Gallery Building, Entryway Special Guests are participating schools, Suncoast Waldorf School and Service Learning Micro-School


1-4:30pm Fiesta Music and Dancing: Art Gallery Building, Entryway and Main Gallery

It’s All About the Art! (And the Kids)

11am-1pm Children’s Arts & Crafts: Indoors, Art Gallery Building, Second Gallery A team of TBUS crafters will head up art projects (for adults, too) creating music shakers, coloring sugar skull and ukulele cartoons, fashioning tissue-paper flowers and more!

11am-4pm Uke-O de Mayo Art Exhibition and Contest: Indoors, Main Art Gallery A one-day art show Artists are invited to submit Latin/Mexican-influenced and family-friendly art, all media, for display at Uke-O de Mayo with first, second and third place prizes (a $100, $50 and $25 gift card) awarded by popular vote. All art work must be ready for hanging in a frame or wired on back.

Artists have an opportunity to sell their art on a shared basis with 50% going to support TBUS Cares Community Projects.

TO SUBMIT ENTRIES: Please contact Emily Stehle, or 727-688-7993 by Thursday, April 25 for all details and to enter one work of art. Up to 35 works will be exhibited. Artists will be asked their inspiration for their art piece and arrange for drop off at Creative Pinellas, 12211 Walsingham Road, Largo by appointment only.

2:15 The Many Faces of Frida: A Look-Alike Frida Kahlo Contest: inside, Art Gallery Building, Second Gallery Everyone is invited to participate in this unique Look-Alike Contest featuring the famous colorful Mexican artist! Dress like Frida, wear flowers like Frida and look like Frida! First, second and third prizes awarded.
