A St. Petersburg-based multimedia artist who specializes in painting conceptual pop art, Mark Mitchell says he’s always in pursuit of “The Big Idea.” A graduate of the Pratt Institute, alum of New York’s School of Visual Art and a former advertising creative director, Mitchell puts concept first and manipulates imagery to surprise, persuade and reward the viewer. Using a variety of media — painting, photography, design, music, spoken word or video — Mitchell finds inspiration from mass media and pop culture, repurposing icons, imagery and techniques to deliver a uniquely personal artistic statement. His works have been featured at Art Basel Miami (at the Scope and Select art fairs), See/Me exhibitions at the Louvre, Armory Arts Week NYC, Tampa’s Gasparilla Festival of the Arts and he’s been on TV locally on Fox 13’s “Good Morning Tampa Bay.” Says Mitchell: “Through the use of meaningful juxtaposition and social commentary, my work is an exploration of the irony, contradiction, parallels and harmony to be found in 21st century life.”
