Assistant Arts Project Manager

What we do:

Creative Pinellas has a growing public arts program that works with local governments, municipalities, and organizations to create public art opportunities throughout Pinellas County.  The focus of the program is to elevate and celebrate Pinellas County as the Arts Coast – creating and building on its reputation as an arts and cultural destination, while supporting the local public art community who live and create here!

Creative Pinellas is looking for a contract assistant project manager to join our team on an ongoing basis and to help coordinate projects from beginning to end and help develop new projects with the Arts Project Manager.

This position requires the ability to work independently and collaboratively, to understand and contribute to projects from inception and/or proposal to final delivery. It is very hands-on with day-to-day oversite and attention to detail, with an opportunity to grow and take on projects as a lead in the future.

In this role you will:

  1. Be responsible for working with Arts Project manager at various stages of project management that can include planning, organization, implementation, and administration of the art projects that Creative Pinellas is involved with including murals and public art projects. 
  1. The successful team member will assist in the continuously planning, adjusting, and tracking projects to ensure that the artist has what they need to succeed, and that the artwork is on track to be completed, delivered, fulfilled, or installed on-time and within budget and that the work is in alignment with, and meets agreed upon specifications.
  1. Assist and sometimes function as the lead on all aspects of the projects you are working on, from working directly with the artist/artists team, Creative Pinellas team members and other stakeholders, to connecting with the community and fulfilling partner engagement; and from the initiation of the Call to Artists or Request for Qualifications, to design and implementation, always ensuring the highest quality of communications, transparency and follow through for all involved, and continuously monitoring and motivating all phases of a project to ensure the project’s success.
  1. Assist in preparing and participating in public workshops, events, and communication opportunities to gather community feedback in advance of the launch of a project, to keep the community informed during a project and to celebrate a project’s completion.
  1. You will be an integral part of scheduling and carrying out project meetings with artists, partners, stakeholders, contractors, community members and with Creative Pinellas team members to ensure effective communications with all involved, and that we have community buy-in. And for coordinating and preparing information and materials for the community, for stakeholders and for the Creative Pinellas team.
  1. Work with the Arts Project Manager to follow through on policies and procedures that are in place (or developing new ones if they are not) to address the goals and requirements of each of the individual arts programs, and the full menu of arts programs collectively.
  1. You will have opportunities to focus on working with communities throughout Pinellas County and the Creative Pinellas team to research and recommend new and potential projects, and as needed, to identify sites where the new projects can go. You will be part of the process of connecting with property owners, agencies, etc. to arrange for access and use of those sites, if needed.
  1. Be a key supporter of the marketing and curatorial team members in working with them to prepare and share Artists Calls, RFQ’s, and RFP’s, to recruit artists, to ensure wide and effective outreach, to vet artists, and to develop and implementing artists agreements and contracts.
  1. Be responsible for providing timely accurate reports on the status of the assignments that you are working on, on a weekly and monthly basis.

What We are Looking For

Fabulous project management skills. You “love” to get things planned and organized and to keep projects moving forward and, you have knowledge of and skill with project management principles and tools.

Experience in implementing art (or similar type of) projects and working with artists and or creatives, or creative projects. Specific experience with artists calls, murals, public art, interactive art, collaborative art, arts education, etc. while not required is a plus.

Familiarity, experience, and comfort with budgets, and with working with vendors.

Interest and comfortable in participating in community engagement and building relationships.

Ability to communicate effectively with many different people and audiences, a commitment to follow through, and to build effective working relationships.

Other Details:

This is a long term, contract position, for on-going project implementation. While it is not a full-time position, there will be a regular monthly retainer as well as incentive payments for completion of projects. 

At any given time, Creative Pinellas may have one or two projects going on, that need project-management attention. 

Past projects have included such projects such as an artist print series with the Tampa Rays. Pinellas Trail Mural Project, Sutherland Elementary Mural Project, Lealman Mural Project and more.

Future projects may include public art sculptures and place-making.

This is a position that will prepare you for advancement within the Public Art Program at Creative Pinellas.


  • At least 3 years of successful assistant project management or project management and some samples of your achievements in this area.
  • Great oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to use Excel, Word, PowerPoint and project management tools such as Monday, Slack (or other)
  • Experience working with visual artists (murals, public art, etc.) or with creative teams (architecture, print production, music, interior design etc.) and/or an appreciation of and interest in the creative process is a plus.
  • Project management classes or certification a plus, but not required
  • A two or four-year degree is preferred but not required.
