It’s a lively week despite the summer heat — and we’ve also got a hot tip about an upcoming event you might want to grab tickets for early. Dead Prez, the legendary hip hop duo, are appearing at St. Pete’s Fubar on Saturday of next week, a rare chance to see the group in a small venue— but also all the more likely to sell out. Find out more here.

Marie Antoinette

Opening night Saturday, July 15

This recent play takes the French dilettante queen as a metaphor for the great class divides and charged political struggles of our day, inviting her to stand in for either the supposed cluelessness of the American oligarchy, or the blinding self-indulgence of celebrities. Either way, it’s a piece tailor-made for the freeFall team, whose eye for camp is more than matched by their taste for biting social insight.

Preview 8 p.m. Friday; runs through Aug. 13

$23-$45

freeFall Theatre, 6099 Central Avenue, St. Pete

Trashion Fashion
Saturday, July 15

This annual event marks its tenth year with what organizers are promising will be their most amazing celebration of upcycled and recycled fashion to date. That means adventurous shoes, hats, dresses – anything, really – handcrafted out of leaves, old magazines, plastic bags, and stranger things. It’s a consistent showcase of offbeat creatitvity.

8 p.m., $20-$45

ARTpool Gallery, 2030 Central Ave, St. Petersburg

PAVA Cool Art Show

The Dunedin-based Professional Association of Visual Arts brings its 29th Annual big-tent showcase to St. Pete, where more than 75 craft and fine artists will be on hand. The organization aims to represent a broad spectrum of media, and they’re promising works from painting to jewelry to metalworking to photography. Artists include Monika Watson, Robin Popp and Nathan Miller.

Improvoholics at The Studio@620
Monday, July
 17

Improv still doesn’t have the kind of presence locally that it has enjoyed across the U.S. entertainment landscape for the last decade-plus. But with the Upright Citizens Brigade as a point of reference, this group of polished amateurs promises to spin concepts into songs and sketches on the spot.

7 p.m., $10

The Studio @620,

Info and Tickets Here.

Phantogram and Tycho at Jannus Live
Tuesday, July 18

This pair of electro-influenced artists are simultaneously future-forward, moving, and surprisingly accessible. Phantogram might be described as pop-noise, with big beats and catchy hooks fuzzed through an analog veil. Tycho is a little more understated, slow, and layered — the perfect warmup for a blissed-out evening.

6:30 p.m., $38.75

Jannus Live, 200 First Ave. N., St. Petersburg

Get Tickets Here.
