Kirk Ke Wang
A boundary-pushing contemporary artist and instructor, Kirk Ke Wang holds two MFAs and is a tenured professor at Eckerd College. The Shanghai-born artist often deals with dichotomies of opposites in his life while converging social consciousness and child’s play along with complementary subject matter. A protégé of artist Theo Wujcik, Wang uses oil and acrylic (the latter an homage to his mentor) and even painted Wujcik’s portrait just before the Ybor master painter died of cancer in 2014. Wang’s process and his end results both convey meaning as he playfully experiments with serious subject matter — such as the bittersweet nature of immigration and social injustice. Old and new imagery and a variety of forms are at interplay in Wang’s works. In his recent exhibition Yes & No, Wang conjures the beauty of old Chinese illustrations paired with splashy imagery from pop culture and paper cuttings. The Oldsmar resident has a wife and two daughters, a co-op in Manhattan, a home in Shanghai and a nonprofit Tampa studio.
