Elizabeth Barenis is part of a growing wave of young artists who have decided St. Petersburg is the right place to build a career. A native of Greenvillle, Mississippi, Barenis was the daughter of music store owners, and experimented with various forms of art before pursuing painting. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in New York, and recently made her way to St. Pete.
Barenis’ work ranges from impressionistic watercolor sketches to bold, post-cubist portraits reminiscent of Alex Katz. She has also worked in three dimensions, crafting several playful lamps and light boxes.
Her work has already been displayed in galleries and arts centers from Vicksburg to Little Rock, and she is the recipient of an individual artist grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission. She has also served as an artist in residence for VSA Arts of Mississippi, an organization that serves the disabled.
