Eleanor Pigman is a fine craft artist who creates stunningly detailed and vibrant images of sea life using embroidery and tiny beads. The texture of her beadwork gives her depictions of everything from starfish to sea turtles an intimacy and depth that rival any oil painting.
Pigman hails from New York’s Soho district, and received a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago, with an early focus on watercolor. That changed thanks to an apprenticeship making eyeglass holders at a bead store. The store closed, and Pigman inherited its stock – leaving her little choice but to turn it into art.
That led first to a series of beaded portraits of political leaders and celebrities, then progressed to her current interest in sea life. She has also expanded into creating jewelry, and has found a growing market for her work both locally and nationally. She also teaches frequent beading classes in St. Petersburg and throughout the Bay Area.
