In her oversized, realistically-rendered portraits of her friends and family, painter Carrie Smith aims to capture the psychology within the person depicted. Encouraging the viewer to look beyond the gaze, Smith utilizes unusual, yet realistic color choices for her flesh tones, allowing a more expansive range of emotional expressing in the faces.
Born in Clearwater, Smith earned her B.F.A. in Painting and Drawing at Ohio University. At the urging of the faculty at OU, Smith became a full-time artist after graduation. She spends 50-60 hours per week painting in her Clearwater studio.
Smith has won several Best of Show awards at Florida-wide exhibitions and has had her work featured in Tampa Bay Magazine and The duPont Registry: A Buyer’s Gallery of Fine Homes.
In 2016, she has “The Sun Still Rises,” an upcoming solo show at ASI in St. Petersburg as well as “Dynasim,” a group show at Galleria Mistro in Belleair Bluffs.
