PHOTOGRAPHY | MIXED MEDIA
Photographer Nikki Devereux says she likes to focus her attention on the story behind her subject. “I love to illustrate people’s stories with portraiture and create conceptual narratives with my fashion photography,” she says on her website. With heavy use of mixed media, Devereux places her portraiture and fashion photography at the foundation of her mixed media work; she and builds on the photos using acrylic paint, watercolor paint, organic materials, paper from magazines, old books, newspapers and many other types of recycled paper materials. “Part of what I love about using mixed media is the fact that I am repurposing materials that would otherwise be discarded,” she says. Formerly from Pittsburgh, St. Petersburg-based Devereux has lived and worked in Ecuador, New York and Asheville. Devereux studied under Jim Stone of the University of New Mexico at Penland School of Arts and Crafts, an experience, she says, that reawakened her passion for darkroom work and silver gelatin printing. Active in the arts community and the community at large, Devereux, is a member of the St. Petersburg Warehouse Arts District and volunteers with Habitat for Humanity.
