EXPERIMENTAL, SCULPTURE | WEARABLE ART
Marie Gagne creates uniquely wearable art, imaginative head coverings, fashion accessories and unusual textiles that are at once hauntingly old-fashioned and curiously futuristic. Whether monochromatic or colorful, Gagne’s works have included metals, gemstones, fur and other found ephemera that appear to have been stolen from her grandmother’s closet. Many of Gagne’s hats and jewelry designs evoke the Roaring Twenties. Other specialties include accessories made of recycled bicycle chains and millinery with a vintage, steampunk flair. Gagne is a recurring artist in Gulfport’s Fine Arts Friday, an event where local artists chosen by a selection committee show their work and demonstrate techniques while interacting with visitors. In her work life, Gagne is a hair stylist and doctor of naturopathy who practices clinical holistic aesthetics. To see Gagne’s pieces, visit the Marie Gagne’ Hat Gallery and Fashion Parlor located at the historic Peninsula Inn, 2937 Beach Blvd, Gulfport. The old-timey bed and breakfast is the perfect backdrop for Gagne’s anachronistically timeless pieces.
